Study Abroad Guidelines
Studying abroad allows GSS students to broaden their worldview, and GSS majors and minors have studied abroad in more than 20 countries. Taking courses in another region and country, sometimes even in another language, gives students the opportunity to compare issues of gender, sexuality, race, and class across cultures, giving them a new perspective on the field of GSS as well as their own country of origin.
GSS students can easily accommodate an experience abroad. Interested students should keep the following information in mind:
1. To receive GSS credit for a class taken abroad, the course must be focused on the construction of gender and critically examine various markers of identity, including but not limited to gender, race, class, sexualities, and age.
2. All GSS majors must complete GSS 200 (Introduction to GSS) and GSS 490 (capstone course) at the University of Richmond; this credit cannot be obtained abroad.
3. Students seeking GSS credit abroad must speak with a GSS Study Abroad advisor before departure to the host country and upon return in order to transfer credits.
